Border Collies Information - Origin

The Border Collie originated in Great Britain. Nordic breeds are believed to be the Border Collie's ancestors. When the Vikings arrived on the British Isles, they brought these dogs with them. The Border Collie is a result of the cross between the Nordic breeds and local sheepdogs (the Bearded Collie Harlequin, Bob-tailed Sheepdog, Smithfield).

The breed was developed on the border between England and Scotland. Hence, it got the name Border Collie. As far as the origin of the word Collie is concerned, there are several theories. It could have originated from the Gaelic word that means "useful." The German "kuli" means "worker" and can be truly related to the breed. Some believe the word Collie has something to do with "coal, coly" and means black.

The 19th century brought about the standard of the breed. The AKC recognized the Border Collie in 1955. The Kennel Club of England officially recognized it in 1976.
