Border Collie Pup
A Border Collie pup is not the right pet for any family because of some difficulties associated with training. Though this breed is very intelligent, friendly and tolerant by nature, it takes much time, skills, and efforts to train a puppy. Since the breed was created for herding activities, every purebred Border Collie has a herding instinct that should be controlled and developed. Without proper training, herding dogs tend to become dominating, stubborn, and manipulative. They attempt to herd the family by nipping at the heels and don’t obey commands.
Inexperienced dog owners should not obtain a Border Collie pup, but they can buy an adult dog that is already provided with housebreaking, basic obedience training, and socialization. Adult dogs are usually cheaper than puppies. If you are not going to show or breed the dog, consider buying a pet quality Collie or adopting a rescue animal. Pet quality doesn’t mean that the dog is defective. Pet quality Collies possess all basic characteristics of the breed. More than that, show quality Border Collies may be poor herders, because they were bred for the show ring, but not for their original task.
Rescue animals make good pets for loving owners. Actually, it’s next to impossible to find an abandoned high quality Border Collie pup in a rescue, because people usually surrender older and senior dogs. A second hand dog will be easy to keep even for a novice owner. Relinquished dogs with problematic behavior are rehabilitated by volunteer workers. Too aggressive dogs are not available for adoption. With a rescue dog new owners don’t have to think about socializing and obedience training.
Those who plan to show the dog have to choose the breeder carefully. They need a quality puppy from a champion bloodline. Buying a show quality dog is not an easy matter. A buyer has to know much on the breed to determine if the dog corresponds to the breed standard. It’s necessary to visit several reputable kennels and see all puppies available for sale. A show quality Border Collie pup should be sold with a pedigree, health guarantee and registration papers.
