Border Collie Training

Border Collie training and socializing should start in the early age. Border Collies should get used to various people and various situations in order not to be shy in new places and around strangers. Though the breed in general is very intelligent and eager to please, these dogs should be taught to obey the owner. If a Border Collie is not shown who the boss is, it may become dominating and manipulative. Inherent desire of an untrained Collie to herd and chase moving objects and nip at the people’s heels may be difficult to live with.

Basic Border Collie training is provided in any trustworthy kennel that produces purebred Collies for show or for work. It doesn’t matter what the purpose of the puppy is, it should be given at least basic obedience training at the kennel. Such puppies are easy to housetrain and get used to the new family. If a breeder didn’t care much about training the puppies, they would not obtain the best characteristics of the breed.

Since the Border Collie was designed for herding, it’s very active, agile, and endurable. Border Collie training should be interesting and stimulating. These dogs don’t respond to drill, but make success with varied and challenging exercises. Border Collies like fetching, playing with a ball and Frisbee. Mental stimulation is very important for this breed. Exercise needs of Border Collies are very high. A short walk or a play in the yard is not enough for them. These dogs need a few short walks or a single long walk daily. Border Collies enjoy running off-leash and their owners have to choose a safe place for walking with a dog.

If a Border Collie is not provided with enough exercise and was not given proper training, it develops behavior disorders that need correction as soon as it’s possible. The best way out is to ask a professional trainer for help, but many inexperienced owners don’t want to pay for training classes and give the dog up to the rescue or shelter. Volunteer rescue workers have to rehabilitate abandoned dogs with problematic behavior. They provide Border Collie training and prepare every dog for adoption to the new family.
