Border Collies Information - Is This a Healthy Breed?

Border Collies are said to be a healthy breed. It's a working dog and has some peculiarities typical of all working dogs. For instance, some breeders recommend giving Collies real food in order to maintain the stamina and strength.

Collie Eye Anomaly is one of the genetic diseases in Collies. It is a congenital disorder of parts of the eye that can cause blindness. More often, it leads to impaired vision. CEA is not progressive.

Focal/Multifocal Acquired Retinopathy is an inflammatory eye disease that has environmental causes. This lesion accumulates over the years and impairs the vision of the dog.

Hip Dysplasia is the most common genetic disease in Border Collies. It is hip joint damage close to osteoarthritis. Osteochondritis Dissecans is more frequently seen in males than in females. This disease tends to affect the shoulder joints.

A responsible breeders' task is to have both the parents and parents' parents tested. The health of the litter depends on a healthy background. If the parents prove to have no disposition for genetic disorders, the chances of breeding first quality litters are very high.

Deafness is not typical of Border Collies but more and more breeders have their dogs tested for this disorder nowadays.

Border Collies Information - Care

The Border Collie's coat is shedding. It needs daily brushing to remove all dead hairs. A rather thick undercoat to protect the dog from the cold develops in the winter. In summer, when the heat becomes intolerable, it is advisable to comb it out. Border Collies can't stand the summer heat.

There are no special recommendations as far as the grooming is concerned. The Border Collie's toenails must be clipped regularly. The ears examined for hairs, ticks and dirt. Regular bathing and cleaning of the eyes are also necessary to keep the Border Collie in good condition.

Border Collies Information - At Work

Border Collies belong to a herding group. They are judged not by their appearance, but by their ability to herd. The true Collie is known by how it works livestock. Border Collies are gatherers by their natural instinct. They usually collect sheep on steep hills and then move them from one pasture to another. Border Collies sometimes work sheep and cattle in the places where it appears difficult for a shepherd. Their fantastic capacity for work makes them irreplaceable for farmers. It is important for a herdsman to handle his Border Collie well. For example, biting the sheep is considered a fault in a trial dog.

Border Collies also make wonderful family pets. Border Collies make great companion dogs and you will appreciate their intelligence and talents.
